THERE IS both national and international interest in the construction of the port of Ngqura in the Coega Industrial Development Zone outside Port Elizabeth, reports the National Ports Authority.
This follows a "very successful" site inspection of the future Port of Ngqura held by the National Ports Authority of SA during the last week of February.
"Substantial interest was shown by local, national and international contractors, which included European and American contractors. Black economic empowerment companies were also present," says National Ports Authority spokesperson Lize Hayward.
About 180 people, consisting of potential tenderers and suppliers, attended the event.
"We had a very good turnout indicating the interest in the contract for which we called tenders on 1 February 2002. The site inspection has exceeded expectations. Positive feedback was received from numerous tenderers.
"One of the European tenderers commented that some European ports could learn from this site inspection," said Nick van Amstel, deputy chief engineer, National Ports Authority.
The purpose of the event was to provide potential tenderers with information and a first hand understanding of the site conditions. It was also an opportunity for them to raise questions.
The closing date for the submission of tenders is April 30, 2002.
