More than 452 jobs had been created as a result of the current construction at the Coega Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in the Eastern Cape, the Coega Development Corporation (CDC) announced yesterday (Thursday).

“The CDC has worked tirelessly over the years to ensure that, on one hand, we create employment opportunities for our people and on the other hand we diversify our sectors in order to address the scourge of unemployment and poverty in the Eastern Cape,” said CDC unit head of marketing and communications, Ayanda Vilakazi.

Some of the six projects currently at various stages of construction at the SEZ include the Customs Control Area, BAIC Ring Road Project and the BAIC plant site.

Vilakazi noted that the scope of work on these projects included brickwork, electrical, structural steel and civil works. Construction contracts for three of these projects were awarded to small, medium and micro-sized enterprises.

“Every job created is critical in putting food on the table of many of our citizens who rely on the opportunities provided by the Coega SEZ through these projects,” he added.
