Coega records milestone as harbour basin fills up

ED RICHARDSON “ONE THIRD of the Ngqura harbour basin has already been filled with water,” says Chris Matchett, National Ports Authority (NPA) engineer. This follows the successful opening of the valves of six pipes at the Coega site, running water from the sea into the harbour basin. As precisely planned, the event took place on Wednesday, June 30. Executive mayor Nceba Faku calls this mass release of water into the port “a historic milestone in the port’s development.” The flooding of the basin is the culmination of 20 months of hard work.
