China plans highway truck ban

New scheme targets overloaded vehicles NOMPELO NDZIMELA IN A drive to minimise damage and prevent accidents, China has launched a campaign to ban overloaded trucks on its highways, according to internet news service SchedNet. Some 200 000 officials have been deployed throughout the country to ensure that trucks meet weight requirements. Repeated transgressions can result in a maximum fine of US$121 (R720), with licences being revoked, while first time offenders will receive a warning. According to the report, overloaded trucks are responsible for three-quarters of all road accidents in the country. Analysts are sceptical as they believe in the long-term the ban will raise fuel prices and increase the number of vehicles on already congested roads. Reports indicated a 20% drop in road traffic on the first day of the campaign. A similar campaign in Gauteng to ban trucks from using the highways in peak hours was shelved following strong industry opposition.
