A strong logistics
infrastructure is key to
success in the container
industry.
According to Reshaan
Laljith, CEO of CHC
Resources, the location of
the company’s warehouses
in Johannesburg (Greenhills
and Pomona), Durban and
Cape Town, have played a
major role in its growth.
“While CHC Global,
a distributor of bulk
inorganic chemicals in the
southern African region,
along with CHC Films
and CHC Polymerworld
have played a major role
in the company’s success,
we are especially proud of
CHC Container Depot that
has managed to become a
major competitor within a
year of being launched.”
The CHC Container
Depot System provides
logistics, track and trace,
warehousing, storage,
administration and billing.
“We developed the entire
concept around our clients’
needs and as a result the
system encompasses the
entire process – from
notification of pending
arrival, pick up, delivery,
unpacking and storage
to release, calculation of
charges and invoicing.
“We have seen such
growth that already we have
had to upgrade our premises
in Cape Town where we
have now identified new
warehousing facilities in
Montague Gardens. The
14000sqm new warehouse
premises are situated
approximately 5km from
the container terminal
and provide the necessary
additional space.”
Due to increased growth
in third party warehousing
and logistics, the company
has also had to increase
capacity in other regions.
“In Johannesburg we
have doubled our size
up to 25000sqm and in
Durban we’ve increased to
30000sqm.”
For the future, CHC
is looking at opening
branches in sub Saharan
Africa, said Laljith.
“We, like many others,
feel that the next growth
will happen in the
African continent.”
He says already large
multinational companies
are expanding into
southern Africa. “Walmart
is one example. We do
however need to work on
our infrastructure as well
as the way business is done
around our borderporsts
where bribery and
corruption is still rife and
must be rooted out.”
