Certified cargo security products minimise risks

Inadequately secured project

cargo poses numerous risks

during transportation – whether

by rail, road or sea – which is why

it is important to use products that

are certified by globally recognised

international organisations,

according to the managing director of

Cargo Lash, Pooven Moodaliar.

“By using reputable international

companies like Cordstrap, Cargo

Lash is not only in a position to

offer a product that minimises risks

associated with the transportation of

cargo but to ensure

that it offers new and

improved systems

that have been tested

by the necessary

regulatory bodies,”

he said.

These companies

also offer their

customers up-todate

training and

after-sales service,

providing ongoing information on

new rules and regulations.

“There are a number of

international maritime laws around

the secure transportation of cargo

and of course each state also has

its own legislation around this.

And, since most containers are not

unpacked at the ports, one must

also bear in mind the various road

and rail regulations as well,” he

commented.

Moodaliar is a strong proponent

of education and awareness when it

comes to securing cargo adequately.

He told FTW that compliance with

rules and regulations

was always easier

when customers

understood the

reasons behind it.

“When we quote

on a project, all the

potential risks are

discussed, and we

outline our reasons

for using a securing

system with a

particular product. We see ourselves

as problem-solvers and enjoy the

challenge of providing tailor-made,

safe and effective solutions for our

customers,” he said.

And while properly secured cargo

can save lives, with Moodaliar

referring to it as “medical aid” for

transportation modes, he added that

being known for strong standards

of safety and compliance around

the transportation of project cargo

would contribute to South Africa’s

competitiveness in the global logistics

and supply chain market.

Moodaliar pointed out that if cargo

was damaged because it was poorly

secured, insurance companies could

repudiate claims. Furthermore, cargo

must be lashed in accordance with

the insurance agency or underwriter

requirements as well as those

dictated by the cargo owner and the

master of the vessel, he added.
