Car terminal idling

There is spare capacity in

the Grindrod-operated car

terminal, which has 1 455 slots

and both road and rail access.

“Through expansion,

the terminal capacity has

increased to 115 000 car

units per annum, although

terminal volumes are currently

depressed and challenging

in the current market,” said

Alan Olivier, chairman of the

Maputo Port Development

Company and executive

director and chief executive

officer of Grindrod.

Built in 2007 to service the

Gauteng market, the terminal

has not been able to compete

against Durban and Port

Elizabeth, largely due to the

costs of the Maputo corridor,

which include the border

crossing.

It has served as a transit

terminal for vehicles which

had been kept in storage

in the Middle East, as well

as for used agricultural

and mining equipment

for Mozambique and

neighbouring countries.
