Cape wine initiative

Wine exports into China are
a top priority for the Western
Cape government which has
earmarked this as a major
opportunity for its exporters.
The province is aiming
to double wine exports by
2025 – and a spokesman for
the department of economic
opportunities told FTW that
this was seen as a reachable
target. African wine exports
to China are on an upward
trajectory, having clocked 11
million litres in 2014.
“The province is working
towards sustaining this growth
and has developed a focused
strategy – as part of Project
Khulisa – to find ways to boost
wine exports to China,” she
said.
A high-level delegation from
the Western Cape government
in November visited China to
promote the province’s wine
offering.
“Since 1994, South African
wine exports have grown
from 50 million litres to 500
million litres globally. China
is currently South Africa’s
6th largest export market for
packaged wines by volume,”
said the spokesman. “Whilst in
China the provincial delegation
met with one of China’s biggest
importers of Western Cape
wine, Perfect China,” she said.
