The time has come for South Africa’s large trucking companies to step up and stop paying tolls as they along with car rental companies are the last to be breathing life into the Gauteng e-tolling system. This is according to Wayne Duvenage, CEO of the Organisation Undoing Tax Abuse (Outa), who told FTW that the system was grossly inefficient with extremely high administrative costs and scrapping it was the only option that made economic sense. “Those few big trucking and car rental companies are the last bit of oxygen into a system that just does not work. There are millions of rands outstanding. The likelihood of these companies never getting their money back is very strong,” he said. “Also, with the Credit Bureau ruling that no default judgements on e-tolls will affect ratings and around 80% of all e-toll users not paying, it is time for those in the boardroom to start asking the critical questions. It is time to ask why are we paying and our competitors are not? Why are we keeping this system alive?”
