Bunkers drop on Europe route

AN EASING of the international oil price from its recent record highs has been reflected in the January 1 reduction in the bunker surcharge on the SA-Europe sea trade.
All the main lines on this route have announced a similar reduction - from the previous 12.8% to the revised surcharge of 11.08%.
The major body - the Europe-Southern Africa Conference, of which SAECS (SA-Europe Container Service) is a member - led off the announcement. This was immediately followed by declarations from MSC (Mediterranean Shipping Service) and Ignazio Messina (which operates from Mediterranean base ports in Italy, France and Spain) that the reduced bunker surcharge would come into effect with the new year.
This, said Richard Warnes, press consultant for Safmarine (a SAECS line), again illustrates the good faith of the lines. That they do bring down these surcharges where appropriate.
