Building of Angolan deep-water port due to start this quarter

The new port’s initial capacity will be over 50 000 containers a year – double the current 26 000.

The construction of the first phase of the deep-water port of Cabinda in Angola – valued at R9.3 billion - is due to start in this first quarter of the year.

It includes a 675-metre quay for the port’s container terminal, the development of 31 hectares of land area, and of a breakwater along the coastal area of Cabinda, designed to protect the port from the heavy seas prevalent in the region.

There are also plans to build a passenger terminal for services between Cabinda, Soyo and Luanda.

The port will have a minimum draft of 12.5 metres, sufficient to receive the larger ships arriving from the likes of SA and Nigeria.
