SAA cabin crew members affiliated to the South African Cabin Crew Association (Sacca) have downed tools, demanding an increase in their daily meal allowance when travelling overseas, and resulting in the delay and cancellation of SAA flights departing Johannesburg this morning.
Four flights from Johannesburg to Cape Town have been cancelled. Two additional flights, one from Johannesburg to Port Elizabeth and the second from Johannesburg to East London, have been delayed. Affected passengers will be placed on partner airlines’ flights on the same routes.
Those affected by the strike should contact the airline or check the SAA website for more information.
The airline is taking Sacca to the Labour Court at 10h00 this morning. The airline said the strike was illegal but South African Cabin Crew Association general secretary, Mpho Moikangoa, told eNCA the strike would continue.
According to reports, over 1 300 cabin crew members are on strike out of SAA’s total complement of 1 700. It has been confirmed that 85% of SAA’s cabin crew are striking.
