Container and bulk volumes are on a downward spiral at the Port of Cape Town with a particularly significant decrease in liquid bulk. Transnet National Ports Authority said it had been in discussions with its customers to determine the reasons for the drop in volume, but nothing specific had been pinpointed as the cause. “Part of the reason is believed to be because diesel sales in particular are down and also that there’s been lower demand from Eskom, but that cannot be confirmed,” a spokesman said. The port, also for the first time in months, has no oilrig berthed after the two rigs that were in the port departed during June. “The next booking for a rig at the port is only towards the end of the year and is only expected in November,” said the spokesman.
