One of sub-Saharan Africa’s best-run ports, ranked sixth out of 35 ports in the region by the World Banks’ Container Port Performance Index (CPPI) released in May, continues to exceed expectations through its operator, Cornelder de Moçambique.

According to the concession company, the port’s container terminal (CT) has achieved a new record of volume handled in a month, namely 31 767 TEUs in July.

The previous benchmark was 29 446, recorded in March 2021.

In a social media statement, the concessionaire said: “Compared to last year, the volumes handled by TC in July saw an increase of 22% compared to the same period in 2022.”

The statement said that the improved performance “testifies to TC’s greater capacity to meet the growing demands of the market efficiently and effectively.”

The port’s general cargo terminal has also reported growth of 9%.

This is “despite a drop in monthly volume, which totalled 198 934 tonnes compared to previous months,” Cornelder said.
The operator added: “Remember that, in 2022, the Port of Beira was classified by the World Bank as the best in Southern Africa in terms of containerised cargo performance.”

The only other ports in the sub-Saharan region that was ranked ahead of Beira, placed 270 out of 348 globally, is Matadi (Democratic Republic of the Congo), Berbera (Somalia), Conakry (Guinea), Mogadishu (Somalia), and Freetown (Sierra Leone).
