A recent truck accident jammed up Bayhead Road recently – the only access for trucks to all of Durban’s container terminals. The queue, according to a media report, stretched back a couple of kilometres into Edwin Swales Drive – a highway carrying thousands of trucks in and out of the port area every day – and was jamming up the entire road network around the southern end of the port. “And it takes an age to get them cleared up,” said an ex-ship’s captain. “How can you get a bloody big tow truck, and maybe even a mobile crane, along a road system jammed solid with articulated trucks? “Truck breakdowns and accidents do a better job than Cosatu mass action has ever done at shutting down the port of Durban.”
