A new full-service
container park has
been built in the Coega
Industrial Development
Zone (IDZ) within sight of
the port of Ngqura by APM
Terminals Southern Africa.
“Ngqura is the fastest
growing port in southern
Africa. We are eager to
participate and support in
this growth,” says Morten
Jensen, cluster managing
director.
A “crucial” part of the
process of deciding on
Coega was “extensive
interviews with truck
drivers, and customers
including shipping lines.
“Our presence will not
only present shipping
lines with an opportunity
to reduce their cross-haul
costs significantly, it will
also present shipping lines,
importers and exporters
with a flexible one-stopshop
opportunity where
trucking, storage, and
container repair is arranged
by one company.
“This will allow
customers to focus on
their supply chain and
optimisation,” he told FTW.
The Coega facility is part
of APM Terminals’ strategy
to expand its services
around inland container
depots (ICD), warehousing
and trucking throughout
southern Africa.
“The aim is to present
our customers with a
uniform service regardless
of where the customers’
service demands occur.
“We will present
customers with a first-class
and standardised service
based on a transparent
tariff schedule,” he says.
The Coega facility for both
full and empty containers
will cover 60000 sqm once
fully completed.
In the first phase, it is
30 000 sqm.
“Location, turn time and
safety have played a key
role in the design of the
inland container depot.
“We have applied
the best practice and
experience from APM
Terminals’ more than 160
ICDs globally,” he says.
