A delegation from Angola is in Argentina to officially discuss a fisheries agreement, according to the Argentinian media.
It is designed to enhance two-way cooperation in fisheries, aquaculture, and construction of small fishing boats, fishing gear and cooling systems.
The Argentinians hope to be able to establish a fisheries agreement with Angola similar to the ones it has with China and the Republic of Korea.
But if it includes any opening of Angolan waters to Argentinian trawlers for the export market, the Angolans had better watch out. The Argentinian fleet has a global reputation – along with the Poles, South Koreans, Japanese and Chinese – as being “rapists of the seas”. And they could soon fish out Angolan waters.
This would be disastrous from Angola’s food security point of view. Although fishing is the third most important industry in Angola after oil and mining, 90% of fish caught is intended for domestic consumption.
