Amarula leads the way

South African spirits and
wine producer Distell
remains extremely focused
on the Asian market where
it says it is continuing to see
good growth.
According to Kat Pillay,
Distell managing director
for Asia Pacific, the region
comprises several countries
all with huge diversity
in culture, consumption
patterns and consequently
categories and brands.
“China,” he said, “has been
a cognac-driven market for
many years, and remains so,
despite the recent downturn.
But now, with a renewed
focus on driving distribution
and brand building, we
foresee a change in the brand
fortunes and a return to
growth. Like Taiwan, single
malts are seeing growth,
cannibalising blended scotch
– and while Distell’s play is
small here, it is growing.”
