IT WAS an all-female showing at the recent annual prizegiving of the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers (ICS) in Durban where woman-power dominated the local and international awards.
The Safmarine book prize and floating trophy for the highest average marks in South Africa in the qualifying examinations went to Tessa Bentley of Island View Shipping, who also took home the Garlicke & Bousfield book prize for the joint best South African candidate for legal principles of shipping.
Since the exams are sat globally, South African students are also eligible for international prizes, awarded annually at a function in London. Lizelle Brander of MSC was named Best in the World for Foundation Diploma in Liner Trades and Cherilyn Vossberg of Safmarine achieved the highest marks for Shipping Business by a student who is employed by a company which is not a member of the Baltic Exchange.
The ICS, through its correspondence college Tutorship and its 24 branches worldwide, offers courses ranging from entry to degree level. Every year in 80 centres throughout the world more than 1 000 candidates sit its examinations. The South African branch offers correspondence and short courses.
The one day introductory course, Business of Shipping, and the Dangerous Goods Course were launched this year. The week-long residential summer school will be held later this year.
Bob King of Durban-based A-Cubed is the local education officer.
