As the deadline for the UK’s exit from the EU looms, there could potentially be a positive spin-off for the air cargo industry. Industry insiders are predicting major congestion in Dover and Calais with talk of a possible 10 000 trucks stuck on the M20 for up to a week. The only option for urgent consignments will be air cargo. “There may be more delays at Heathrow, but that’s preferable to the potential of truck blockades,” said International Air Transport Association regional head of cargo, Glyn Hughes. “We hope that staying in the customs union will be achieved because every time you have to fill out a form it adds complexity – and that equals cost which affects competitiveness. “It’s the reason we are advocating for a single African air cargo union,” he said.
