As volumes to Namibia continue to increase, the challenge for carriers is dealing with capacity constraints. According to Gerd von Mansberg, managing director of The Cargo Connection, opportunities are plentiful with the many new infrastructure projects under way in Namibia. “We are happy to say that the tonnage to Namibia has grown five-fold in the past fifteen months,” said Von Mansberg. “The challenge is handling the capacity constraints – especially on the morning flights which are extremely popular with the courier and express industry.” Also, with Namibia increasing its trade with Angola in recent months, there’s more opportunity for the movement of cargo. The Cargo Connection represents Air Namibia in South Africa. “At first there were many management changes in the cargo section of the airline but it has stabilised and a clear vision and strategy is now in place to move cargo forward,” said Von Mansberg. “The new management is dynamic and enthusiastic making for a great working relationship.” He says both The Cargo Connection and Air Namibia are positive about cargo volumes to and from Namibia. “The outlook for Air Namibia’s future is closely tied to the developments in the country, which is definitely on a growth path.” Also, with greater tourism demand in the country, there has been a growing need to cater for passenger seats. That in turn creates capacity for cargo on the aircraft, which serves the growing economy well. According to Von Mansberg, The Cargo Connection is planning to sign co-operation agreements with several other international carriers in order to make Windhoek – and therefore Namibia – a more accessible market.
