AIR TANZANIA this month increased its weekly flight frequencies into South Africa from three to five following a review of the bilateral air service agreement between the two countries. South African Airways acquired a 49% stake in the East African airline at the end of last year, and has made available to Air Tanzania two B737-200s for domestic and external operations as well as two Dash 8 turboprops to serve its smaller domestic schedules. Plans are also under way for SAA to deploy a B737-800 on the Johannesburg-Dar es Salaam route in mid-year. Air Tanzania now departs Johannesburg at midday on Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The Wednesday flight serves Zanzibar directly, with a direct service to Kilimanjaro on Saturdays. Flights on the other days serve Dar es Salaam only. SAA is currently training the airline’s cockpit and cabin crew.
