African airfreight carriers see major surge in global freight volumes

International freight tonne kilometres (FTKs) – carried by African carriers – surged by 35% year-on-year in March compared to the same month last year.

According to the March 2017 International Air Transport Association (Iata) Air Freight Market Analysis report released today (Wednesday), the improved performance was helped by rapid growth on the trade lane to and from Asia following an increase in direct services between the continents.

Global FTKs grew by 14% year-on-year in March – the fastest pace since October 2010. Airlines based in Europe and Asia Pacific accounted for around two-thirds of the annual increase in freight volumes.
