Ethiopian Airlines has announced that it will inaugurate its new 150 000-sqm cargo terminal during the second International Civil Aviation Organisation’s (Icao) Global Air Cargo Development Forum in the capital of Addis Ababa at the end of June.
The additional 600 000 tonnes of annual uplift capacity that the terminal will bring will make it one of the world’s largest terminals, equivalent to cargo terminals such as Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam and Changi Airport in Singapore.
“We have been making massive investments in infrastructure projects to modernise and expand our cargo facilities at a total cost of US$ 150 million,” said Ethiopian Airlines CEO, Tewolde GebreMariam.
“The new Cargo Terminal-II combined with our existing Terminal-I will give us a total tonnage capacity of around one million per annum, which is the largest in the continent of Africa.”
He added that the increased capacity of the cargo facilities would create adequate transporting capacity for the fast growing import and export demand of the continent.
The new terminal includes facilities such as a dry cargo terminal, a perishable cargo terminal with cold chain storage, an apron area which accommodates five additional large freighter aircraft, a truck parking apron. It is fitted with different climate chambers for storage and handling of temperature-sensitive products.
The Icao air cargo forum will be held from June 27-29.
