Abidjan port upgrades commence

Abidjan port will increase its container traffic from 1.2-3 million TEUs by 2020.

Ivory Coast has begun construction on its Abidjan port upgrades which include a second container terminal and widening of the canal.

The project, valued at $962 million, is expected to allow Abidjan to increase container traffic from 1.2-3 million TEUs by 2020, reports news agency Reuters.

The port is among the busiest in sub-Saharan Africa and serves as a gateway to northern landlocked nations.

China Harbour Engineering was awarded the contracts for both projects, with the bulk of the cost covered by a loan from China's Eximbank, explains Reuters.
