The Chemical and Allied
Industries’ Association
(CAIA) is calling on its
members who transport
dangerous goods to
ensure they are ready
for the implementation
of the Administrative
Adjudication of Road
Traffic Offences (Aarto)
system in April next year
– or they could face losing
their licences and permits.
Aarto, which is
currently being piloted
in Johannesburg and
Tshwane, will be rolled
out country-wide and will
see drivers losing points
for traffic offences.
The first and second time
a driver exceeds 12 demerit
points, his licence will be
suspended for three months
(for each point over 12). The
third time, the licence will
be cancelled and the driver
must reapply as a learner
driver. Once points are
accumulated, it takes three
months of infringementfree
driving for them to be
removed, one at a time.
