A raging fire aboard
the containership MV
Boundary was brought
under control by her crew
but left her powerless,
requiring the salvage tug,
Smit Amandla, to tow
her to Cape Town where
she arrived on Sunday
(October 9).
The vessel, a wellknown
caller at South
African ports, was en
route from Durban to
Walvis Bay when a fire
broke out in her engine
room 26 nautical miles off
Cape Columbine, about
150km from Cape Town.
Reports suggest the fire
was so fierce at one stage
that the vessel’s master
considered abandoning
ship. The Filipino/
German crew managed
to bring it under control,
even though the main
engine was disabled as a
result.
A team of engineers
has been on board to
inspect the damage to
the vessel, registered in
Majuro in the Pacific.
