A weightier problem for some lines than others

UNDER-DECLARATION of container weights by shippers is “a common problem” in SA, according to Barry New, MD of P&O Nedlloyd. And it’s a very real problem for lines whose ships have a very definite payload capacity. “It does seem to be more widespread in SA than elsewhere,” said New. “We’ve tried to address the issue by sending notices to shippers but it needs constant reminders.” But the commonality of the problem is different with different lines, according to FTW research. “We’ve had one or two containers under-declared,” said Maersk Sealand SA MD, Flemming Dalgaard, “but not on a regular basis.” MOL executive, Michael Valcic, agreed. “It’s definitely there,” he said, “but not so much of a problem for us in SA except in reefers which are heavier than expected. “But for general purpose (GP) cargo, we’re not confronted with this.”
