A city in crisis

There are renewed
concerns about the
impact of the drought on
agricultural exports after
the City of Cape Town
reported last week that
dam levels had declined to
24.1%. With the last 10%
of a dam’s water mostly not
being usable, dam levels
are effectively at a level of
14.1%.
The mother city’s
mayoral committee
member for Informal
Settlements, Water
and Waste Services
and Energy, Xanthea
Limberg, said: “The city
continues to accelerate its
emergency water schemes
in accordance with the
disaster declaration.
“It is carrying on
with extensive pressure
reduction programmes to
reduce the f low of water
and water losses through
leakage in the pipework of
the distribution system."
