Road wage hike
ROAD TRANSPORT operators have increased minimum wages in Zimbabwe by 50%, which shippers say will seriously affect the competitiveness of rates to Durban and Beira.
The main effect will be felt on the Beira route, said one shipper, as primary exporters - tobacco and minerals - sign year-long agreements with the railways. Before, there was not that much difference in rates and given the much quicker service and reliability of road, the railways were losing out hugely.
