Zambian lesson in how to “lose” two shipyards

The Zambian government has started talks with Kenya and Tanzania in an effort to reclaim its shipping yards in the two countries, local media reported.

Zambian minister of transport, Yamfwa Mukanga, said the country used to have a shipping yard at Mtwara port in Tanzania and another at Mombasa port in Kenya years back.

These, he added, were “lost by the government” during Zambian liberalisation and subsequent privatisation of state enterprises in the 1990s – when some properties “could not be accounted for”, while others “could not be traced”.
