SPOORNET IS once again operating in the former Zaire, now the Democratic Republic of Congo after the new government and SA reached agreement to resume commercial activities.
The country's rebel movement that successfully ousted former Zairian president Mobuto Sese Seko nationalised Sizarail, a company jointly owned by Spoornet, a local parastal and Belgian company Transurb. Up to 10 locomotives and 40 carriages worth R25m belonging to Spoornet were affected.
Spoornet secured a court order to seize Congolese rolling stock in Zambia in response. These have now been handed back following an agreement to resume rail traffic.
