Transnet is expanding its network across the African continent. In the latest development a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed a week ago between Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) and the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA) to pave the way for co-operation between the two port authorities. The agreements between ports in southern and eastern Africa are being entered into by port authorities moving towards maritime regional integration, according to Tau Morwe, chief executive of Transnet National Ports Authority. “We believe that in a spirit of co-operation we can reduce the cost of doing business in the region by being efficient and reliable as we play a key role in lifting intra-regional trade within the SADC region from the current 12%,” said Morwe. MoUs have been signed with Maputo Port Development Company and the Namibian Ports Authority. Later this year agreements will be signed with the ports of Angola, Kenya, Tanzania and Sudan. Collaboration between the ports will include the sharing of maritime expertise and exchange of technical expertise in relation to port management, port operations, port engineering, port environment and security as well as training.
