SEARCHING FOR some other figures - on a totally unrelated subject - FTW came upon the following statistics in Safmarine's data-base.
It's an indication of what an average shipping line gets up to - and downloaded to FTW under the heading: Miles of Smiles.
For the year from January to end-November, Safmarine deployed 40 ships (owned and chartered); sailed a total of over 3,7-million nautical miles on trades all around the globe; and made a total of 5 100 port calls.
That was its own fleet movement, and excluded the activity of partner lines in ship-sharing consortia like SAECS on the Europe run, and Safari on the Far East trade.
