ON JUNE 1 the long-awaited weighing facilities for road transport vehicles in the Port of Durban will swing into operation.
Two weighbridges have been installed.
A platform weighbridge will be located at berth 9, Maydon Wharf and the second, an axle weighbridge, at C-shed, City Terminals at the Point.
The C-shed machine is allocated for use by vehicles transporting cargo to or from City Terminals in the port only.
The Maydon Wharf site is open to the road transport industry in general. This facility has a platform weighbridge with an 80 ton capacity and 24 metre platform, which is the only commercial weighbridge in Durban able to weigh a complete horse/superlink trailer combination without unhitching. Vehicle turnaround time is thus substantially reduced.
As the weighbridge is situated away from the main thoroughfares, traffic is light and ease of access and egress is simplified.
Individual axle printouts are available, showing the respective axle weights.
The weighbridges will be operated by Harbour Weighing Services, a subsidiary of the Harbour Group. They will open for a minimum of 18 hours daily, seven days a week.
