For members of the freight industry – importers and exporters included – looking for training in the World Customs Organisation (WCO) instruments, the place to go is Global Maritime Legal Solutions (GMLS). The company was recently appointed official WCO distributor for e-learning training products for the Southern African Customs Union (Sacu) countries. First students to be enrolled, directors Pieter du Plessis and Donald Mackay of Xikhovha Advisory – a consulting practice focusing on international trade, tax, legal, financial, insurance, marketing and the information technology (IT) environment – told FTW that they had recognised the critical importance of these e-learning training products. According to GMLS director Estee Tyler, the comprehensive list of WCO products in the training specialist’s portfolio includes the WCO harmonised system (HS) and its respective sections and chapters on classification which can be purchased individually. Customs valuation and origin along with the SAFE framework of standards linked to the authorised economic operator (AEO) concept are additional modules available. “Our first students have focused on that SAFE framework and AEO part of the WCO programme on behalf of their clients,” she said. GMLS is also playing a vital part in the GMLS/Lexis Nexis Global Supply Chain Conference due to be held in Johannesburg and Durban on March 25 and 26 where the keynote speaker is the author of Incoterms, Professor Jan Ramberg.
