WALVIS BAY Corridor Group chairman Sebby Kankondi believes the Walvis Bay Corridor has become a working model for corridor development in southern Africa. He said that while the ratification of the Trans Kalahari Corridor Memorandum of Understanding signed between the governments of Botswana, Namibia and South Africa in Walvis Bay in November 2003 was still in process, the effective implementation had already started. Harmonised TKC customs procedures, for example, had been tried, tested and enforced since August last year. In terms of business development and Corridor utilisation, he said there was continued cooperation with the automotive sector in Gauteng aimed at attracting shipments through the port of Walvis Bay. The Trans Caprivi Corridor last year received prominence through the completion of the Katima Mulilo bridge and road rehabilitation between Sesheke and Livingstone. A dedicated TCC development programme successfully generated market awareness in Zambia, he said.
