THE FIXED ASSETS of the privately owned warehousing and distribution business, Freight Exchange, have been acquired by the British-based Tibbett & Britten, SA.
Freight Exchange is being merged with the group's existing South African network division, SA Warehousing Services, which is to be renamed Tibbett & Britten SA (TBSA), giving the latter access to the Free State which has been the company's only major geographical area of the country without direct coverage.
SAWS and Unifast, the former Unilever company, were purchased by Tibbett & Britten in 1992.
Freight Exchange has 9300 sq m of ambient warehousing, including a new purpose-built 2750 sq m warehouse on a 2ha site in Bloemfontein, a total of 52 commercial vehicles, and a smaller transhipment centre in Kimberley.
SAWS is a national distributor of FMCG (fast-moving consumer goods) merchandise in South Africa, with existing depots at Alrode, Durban, Cape Town and Port Elizabeth.
T&B group provides logistics services for retailers and manufacturers across four main product sectors in 20 countries. It operates from 252 sites, ranging in size from 2000 sq m to 180 000 sq m.
