Wanna be a spaceman – and walk on the Red Planet?
You can – as long as you’re American. From next month Nasa will be taking applications for astronauts.
Also, that Mars dream can come true. As Nasa administrator, Charles Bolden, said: “This next group of American space explorers will inspire the Mars generation to reach for new heights, and help us realise the goal of putting boot prints on the Red Planet.”
And what do you need on your CV?
- A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in engineering, biological science, physical science or mathematics. An advanced degree is desirable.
- Followed by at least 3 years of related, progressively responsible, professional experience or at least 1 000 pilot-in-command time in jet aircraft.
- Ability to pass the Nasa astronaut physical - which includes the following specific requirements: Distant and near visual acuity - must be correctable to 20/20, each eye; Refractive surgical procedures of the eye are allowed; Blood pressure not to exceed 140/90; Standing height between 62 and 75 inches.
