Walvis dredger returns to work

Plans are still on track, writes Leonard Neill

GEOBOTES 15 is back in action - and the dredging of Walvis Bay harbour is proceeding at full steam once again.
The vessel, one of two which the Holland-based Ham Dredging Company is using in the deepening of Walvis Bay harbour, struck hull problems last month and was sent to the East London Shipyards for repair.
Nothing serious and it hasn't delayed our plans to have the entire dredging operation completed by the end of June, says Jerome Mouton, marketing manager of Namibian Ports Authority (Namport).
The two dredgers are in operation in the commercial harbour and the fishing section. The damaged vessel had to leave its work in the commercial harbour, but not before the main berths had been deepened to the contracted 12,8m, allowing the first of the MACS vessels to call there on schedule last week.
All that needed to be done was some of the sloping in the other areas, said Mouton. This is now under way and with the fishing harbour work on schedule, we will have everything completed by the end of this month.
