Volumes likely to outstrip port expansion plans

Ray Smuts MAERSK SEALAND recently concluded a study projecting container volume growth at South African ports over the next ten years. Referring specifically to Cape Town, SA MD Flemming Dalgaard commented: “There is no doubt the terminal needs the new cranes, the extra land, and more, within that period. Cape Town needs to grow much more and I don’t think Sapo’s proposed 300-metre container terminal extension will be sufficient because of the huge global drive toward increased container usage.”
