Vandalism and theft of equipment has cost the National Railways of Zimbabwe the equivalent of R80 million in lost revenue in the last three months, says the corporation's pr manager, Gamaliel Rungani. This is the value of business lost by cancelled or delayed trains. There have been six serious accidents in the last three months, with the Bulawayo to Harare line being blocked for three days after a head-on collision between two trains. Missing signals equipment is blamed for many of the accidents. "The NRZ is losing business to road haulage companies because of the problems," said Rungani.
