US extends security initiative to Rotterdam

THE PORT of Rotterdam is trialling scanning equipment on loan from the US energy department to intercept devices smuggled inside containers that could be used to build a nuclear weapon. That’s according to UK-based IFW which reports that the joint project, costing US$3m to set up, is part of the US Megaport Initiative to step up security at the world’s key ports. Rotterdam is the first non-US port to receive the scanners. If the trials are successful the Dutch government will pay for the equipment, according to a port spokesman.
