Upington hub draws strong support from Namibia

KEVIN MAYHEW THE MAINLY perishable hub being proposed for Upington Airport is actively seeking to secure the fish export business that is flown out of Johannesburg after being road hauled from Walvis Bay, according to South African Chamber of Business policy executive transport and logistics, Wayne Bateman. Bateman said that active marketing was under way to gauge support for the new facility – and Namibia was a key area that had shown interest. Upington wants to position itself as a perishable hub to take pressure off Johannesburg as it believes it is ideally situated for this role. It also intends attracting interest as a hub for sub-Saharan countries moving perishables and other airfreight products that are generally routed through Johannesburg.
