Trucks were set alight and destroyed in random scenes of unrest this morning as protesters took to the streets in areas south of the Port of Durban.
In footage sent through by a freight industry representative the charred cab of at least one truck can be seen.
A curtain trailer behind it was also gutted.
The source identified Umlazi, Mega City and Prospekton as the areas where the violence had flared up, presumably in protest against poor service delivery.
“It’s unrelated to the recent driver strike,” said Mike Fitzmaurice, chief executive of the Federation of East and Southern African Road Transport Associations (Fesarta).
“It seems that at least two trucks were burned in this morning’s unrest.”
He added that it appeared to have been all along South Coast Road.
The other source said the unrest had caused significant delays as it had prevented trucks from getting to the harbour.
In addition, trucks backing up on Bayhead Road contributed to frustrations transporters had to deal with this morning, with information as to the cause of congestion remaining scant.
A Fesarta security official was still looking into the cause of the protest action at the time this report was posted.
