The rescheduled Truck Driver Safety and Wellness Symposium is set to take place in Boksburg in May.

Hosted by the SaferStops Association in partnership with the Department of Transport, the event will bring together truck drivers, fleet managers, government officials, and logistics business representatives to discuss key challenges facing the trucking sector.

The symposium, which takes place from May 8-9, will cover topics such as mental health and resilience, driver safety, financial well-being, road security, and emerging technologies in the transport sector.

It aims to equip truck drivers with practical strategies for their professional and personal lives, emphasising both safety on the road and holistic wellness.

Reflecting on the previous event, Kabelo Peete, a truck driver at OneLogix, said it was impactful.

“What set it apart was the unique chance to engage directly with industry leaders who genuinely grasped our day-to-day challenges," he said.

"Beyond safety protocols, the event shone a spotlight on an area that we drivers often overlook—our personal well-being. I am now able to implement practical wellness strategies that have enhanced both my driving performance and my quality of life outside of work.”

The symposium has secured the backing of major transport companies, including leading vehicle manufacturers and logistics firms.

UD Trucks Southern Africa managing director Filip van den Heede said the industry was committed to safety and progress.

“Our participation is a reflection of our commitment to making a meaningful impact in the transport industry. By working together, we are not just driving innovation; we are driving change for a safer, better future,” he said.

Unitrans CEO Edwin Hewitt echoed this sentiment, stressing the importance of ongoing training and investment in driver well-being.

“We prioritise investment in comprehensive driver training, cutting-edge safety technology, and ongoing coaching to support the well-being of our drivers. The symposium offers a valuable opportunity to engage with industry leaders, equipping our drivers with the tools and knowledge they need to excel both on and off the road.”

The symposium has industry support from the Commercial Transport Authority, G Drivers, the South African Express Parcel Association, and sponsors including Santam, Engen, Absa, Hollard, Isuzu, Iveco, MAN, UD Trucks and Volvo Trucks.  In addition, Courier Incubator, OneLogix, Powerfleet and Zolabix will showcase their latest innovations.

SaferStops Association CEO Nicci Scott-Anderson said there were long-term benefits of investing in driver well-being.

"A small investment in your employees' well-being can lead to big returns. By supporting their health and mindset, you help them build resilience, take ownership of their careers, and stay engaged—ultimately driving productivity, retention, and your bottom-line earnings.”

She said that "by attending the symposium, you have the power to transform the way your drivers view their health, work, and lives – and in turn strengthen your business."
