THE TRANSPORT industry was one of the only three industries which
recorded a decrease in average monthly salaries paid to employees last year.
According to Statistics South Africa,
the other two industries which showed a decrease in salaries were the storage and communication industries.
The decreases, which amounted to 17,8%, were mainly due to the retrenchment of highly-paid government
employees from September 1999 and the fewer hours worked by employees in non-governmental institutions during most of 1999, said Stats SA
spokesperson, Annette Myburgh.
