It's part of pre-privatisation
restructuring, writes Leonard Neill
A NEW ROAD transport division within Transnet, including sections of Portnet, Spoornet and Autonet, is being formed as part of the restructuring campaign prior to privatisation.
Transnet spokesman Thami Didiza has announced that the project will combine elements of each of the company's divisions to form a focused road freight group of large proportions.
Known currently as Rubber Wheels until an official title is announced, it involves an effort to increase efficiencies by eliminating duplication of functions within Transnet's groups.
Ernest Edmond, a former Unitrans manager, has been appointed to head the operation with his deputy Thandeka Mgodaso, currently general manager of human resources at Transnet.
Watching the development of the new process with interest is Unitrans managing director of freight Roger Naisby, who says of it:
There are certain elements of the new company that we would be interested in if it were privatised.
The move has been given full approval by the department of public enterprises, where Zaid Nordien, chief director of communications says the plan is part of a rationalisation of like functions within parastatals.
It makes sense to bundle Transnet's road freight capabilities together before they are sold, he said.
