Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) has made significant progress on its Alkantstrand Beach refurbishment project, a key initiative that aims to protect one of Richards Bay’s iconic coastal landmarks from soil erosion.
TNPA said in a statement on Thursday that the final phase of the project was about to begin, after teams from the Port of Richards Bay in recent weeks transported rocks from the South Dunes precinct and placed them at the base of geo-sandbags along the shoreline.
This temporary barrier offers immediate protection to vital beach facilities, including the lifeguard house, which was previously at serious risk of collapse.
Port of Richards Bay Manager, Dennis Mqadi, said the important project had gained significant traction.
“We are proud of the strides made in restoring Alkantstrand Beach. While critical milestones have been achieved, work continues with dredging and sand replenishment to ensure the beach is ready for the festive season,” said Mqadi.
TNPA said the final phase of the project, due to begin soon, would focus on reshaping and reinforcing the shoreline through continued dredging, sand replenishment, and the construction of a coffer dam to manage dredged materials. Imported sand would be used to support the area and enhance beach stability.
“With this strengthened shoreline, TNPA is committed to preserving the natural beauty and resources of the region, fostering a coastal environment that future generations can enjoy.”
