Transnet gets serious about training

Transnet has put its money where its mouth is when it comes to skills training – particularly for youth and women.

Transnet Port Terminals (TPT) will invest R27 million in the training of 117 apprentices who have been placed at terminals across three provinces.

In addition TPT has spent R44 million on training programmes specifically created for female employees.

Meanwhile, TNPA is running a two-year marine training programme at the Port of Mossel Bay to upskill deck trainees to become skippers and engine trainees towards a Motorman Grade 2 qualification.

“Thus far, nine candidates are being trained by the skippers, engineers and crew in the Port of Mossel Bay according to their training and succession plans,” said marine operations manager, captain Dave Keller.

The trainees will be exposed to quayside berthing operations, operational equipment on vessels, as well as general craft maintenance and will be involved in the port’s safety programmes.
